An air conditioner filter is dirty enough, off any central air conditioning unit. An air conditioner cools the indoor air by sucking air at ambient temperature through the filter. This filter works to trap debris and particulates that would otherwise clog the system. The air then passes through the duct to the air conditioning unit itself, where it is cooled and dehumidified.

If an air conditioning filter becomes sufficiently clogged, the increased air pressure can cause the filter itself fails. This will result not only unfiltered air reaches the air conditioner, but potentially the particles trapped in the filter will be released into the system. The buildup on the coils of the air conditioner and the compressor can lead to drive failure and reduced energy efficiency, along with a costly repair bill.
As a filter becomes clogged again, the unit has to work harder and you will find it difficult to take the air, and will have to run more to reduce the air temperature inside the thermostat. The longer you have to run a unit, consume more electricity to cool your home. In addition, in an air conditioned parts are classified only by a certain number of hours of use before failure. The longer you run your air conditioning and the more difficult your operation, the sooner you'll have to replace parts in the unit.
Some air conditioners have newer consumption sensors that can detect the amount of air flowing through the filter. If a filter becomes clogged enough, the unit will shut off until you replace the filter. Older units have timers based on systems that shut off the air conditioning once a month and have a message on the thermostat indicating that it is time to change the filter. The air conditioning can be turned on without changing the filter, but you may be voiding your warranty.
