The function of the drain pan to catch moisture is caused by condensation inside the unit before they damage other components of your air conditioning or windows, walls or floors below the window. A filter drain pan with water causes the accumulation of condensation caused by overflow, which can damage the windows, drywall and flooring.

Today, drain pans are made resistant plastic, stainless steel or fiberglass. The drain pans are typically 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) deep and are equipped with two drain outlets and plugs for easy draining.
Regularly clean the air conditioning unit to prevent dust and dirt buildup on the external coils. Use a cotton swab or a soft brush to clean the hole of the drain pan and replace the drain pan if your pipe is old, cracked or is leaking. Make sure the air conditioning unit is tilted slightly down in the back to allow excess water to flow through the back of the unit and out and down your window or inside the floor.

Most drain pans are located adjacent to the coils or the drive section. Check the manufacturer's manual that comes with the AC to find the exact location of the tray and instructions on how to remove, clean or replace the drain pan for your specific model.
