The total number of British thermal units sent by an air conditioner is directly proportional to the size of the space that the unit can cool. BTU higher the greater the space that the unit can cool. Although rough estimates of cooling capacities are available for each air conditioner, there are several factors that can affect this estimate.

Split Central Air – Square Footage.

The output of BTUs of an air conditioner is directly proportional to the number of feet (meters) square the unit can cool. To find out the square footage of a room, multiply the length of the room in feet (meters) by the width in feet (meters). Perform this task in any room you want to cool with the air conditioner 12,000 BTU to determine if it is the right size.

Split AC Unit – Number of persons.

The number of people in a room affects the efficiency of an air conditioner. If three people are using the space in question, for example, the air conditioner has to work harder to cool the space if I did only one person to be there. An air conditioner 12000 BTU is designed to cool a room of 450 to 550 square feet (41 to 51 m2). If the square footage of the room within these parameters, the unit will operate acceptably.

Portable AC Unit – BTUs.

If the room is 500 square feet (46 m2), an air conditioner of 12,000 BTUs should be able to cool it. However, three people who regularly use the room will require one of 14,000 BTUs. If the room gets constant sun all day, or if you use the unit in a kitchen, this can increase the BTUs requirement again.
