The air renewal is needed to replenish the oxygen and evacuating the byproducts of human activity, or production process, such as carbon dioxide, excess water vapor, unpleasant odors or other contaminants.

To measure or specify the ventilation of an enclosure must indicate the volume of air that is renewed in the time unit. The most common is to refer the volume of air per occupant that renews and unit time. or per unit area and unit time flow.

Ventilation of a room can be natural or forced. There is talk of natural ventilation when no artificial energy input to achieve the renewal of air, commonly, natural ventilation is achieved by leaving openings in the room (doors, windows, skylights, etc..). The forced ventilation uses fans to get the renewal.
In the case of natural ventilation, the temperature differences between the outside and the inside and wind effects are the basis of the forces which cause the movement of air necessary to achieve venting. Based on these forces, and the surface orientation and location of doors and windows can be achieved very important ventilation rates.
